Johan Badenhorst

Producer and Director

Johan is the Voetspore Team leader. This is his 15th Voetspore adventure since 2000. Covering more than 350 000 kilometres and visiting 40 countries in Africa makes him one of the most well-travelled modern-day explorers of the continent.

In 2017 the team ventured further abroad to India and its incredible diversity, but in 2019 and 2020 Johan brought Voetspore home to showcase SA’s unique beauty and hidden gems. This year, the journey continues, following the Zambezi from source to sea. Johan is married to Alma and lives in Kleinmond in the Western Cape.

Stefan Sonnekus

Cameraman

Stefan has worked on a number of Voetspore series as editor, photographer, and videographer since 2005. Because of his move to the Western Cape some nine years ago, he became less involved in the production, but made a welcome return in 2016 with the Reunion trip and again in 2017 as photographer and editor on the India series. Stefan was the cameraman for the ViSA 1 and 2 series. The latter he was also responsible for the editing. He is married to Elizna, has a 10-year old son Sebastian, and lives in Wellington in the Boland.

Francois Marais

Technician

Francois, whose daytime job is to manage the Voetspore 4x4 fitment Centre in Menlyn, Pretoria, has been a sporadic member of the team since 2001 when he first visited Voetspore in the Namib. The following expedition he joined as a full-time member – From the Cape to Kilimanjaro. This he repeated with the Casablanca and Equator journeys. Like the Rift Valley, Madagascar, India and ViSA he joined the team for a few weeks with many other expeditions. Francois lives Voetspore every day as there are few with his capabilities to fit and equip a safari vehicle. It is always a pleasure to have him on board.

Streicher Badenhorst

Photographer and Action Camera Operator

Streicher embarked on his first Voetspore journey when he was just 9 years old. He continued travelling with the team until the age of 16 when first school obligations and later university studies prevented him from joining the expedition. As a post-graduate of the University of Stellenbosch, Streicher yet again joined the team on a journey through South Africa in ViSA 1 and 2. On this year's expedition, Streicher took on the added responsibility of Photographer. He is also responsible for capturing a different perspective through the action cameras and updating the social media pages. Voetspore Zambezi will be his tenth journey as part of the team.

Nina Badenhorst

Logistics

After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Tourism at the University of Pretoria, Nina ventured off to Cape Town as an event coordinator at Wild Clover Breweries. Realising her passion for people and nature, she joined Voetspore Safaris in 2018. Nina organises tours and also acts as host, cook and guide on self-drive, guided tours in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Angola. During Voetspore in South Africa (2) she did this for the Voetspore Team as well. Nina, as the first full-time female member of the team quickly became one of the most popular. Voetspore Zambia is her second journey, but she visited the team during their Indian adventure.

Norbert Coetzee

Logistics

Norbert is a field guide and hails from Riemvasmaak where he has been actively involved in the development of the tourism facilities and 4x4 routes in the area. His first trip with the team was from Casablanca to the Cape in 2009 and Voetspore Zambezi will be Norbert‘s 9th Voetspore journey. Norbert’s knowledge of the veld, the Namaqualand and Richtersveld areas makes his contribution to the team invaluable and the fact that he is great at baking bread on the open fire is a bonus! Together he and Nina form a strong team in the kitchen, as well as handling the logistics.

Voetspore Zambezi:

The Route

We travel from South Africa to the source of the Zambezi. The route takes us through Botswana to the border crossing at Kasane. From there we travel to Livingstone and then turn north, past Kafue, to the northeastern corner of Zambia.

The official start of the journey is at the source of the river near Ikelenge. The river flows into Angola, but COVID 19 restrictions prevent us to enter this country. We travel south to the city Zambezi, where we once again meet the river. At Lukulu we go tiger fishing at Matoya. When then cross the river for a visit to the Liuwa Plains before returning to the Sioma Ngonye Falls. We follow the river downstream to Mosi-oa-Tunya, the biggest waterfall in the world, better known as Victoria Falls. After a visit to Lake Kariba, we go to Mana Pools and Cherowe. In Mozambique we visit Cahora Bassa, tete and the Lower Zambezi. The journey takes us past the grave of Mary Moffat near Caia and the sugar cane plantations of Marromeu, all the way to Chinde in the Zambezi Delta on the coast of Mozambique.

Voetspore Zambezi:

Naby Lukulu gaan ons tiervisvang by Matoya.
